Hypnosis and NLP – “Coaching on Steroids”
More and more studies confirm the efficacy of hypnosis, in particular with respect to overcoming internal obstacles and improving performance.
The latest edition of ‘Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology’, which is the textbook used if you study Sporty Psychology, makes positive mention of hypnosis. The 2015 edition says: “Originally used by clinical psychologists and psychiatrists outside of sport to enhance performance, focus attention, increase confidence, and reduce anxiety, hypnosis has been increasingly used in sports contexts.” (R. Weinberg/ D. Gould, page 283).
NLP stands for ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming.’ Neuro = related to the nervous system. Linguistic = pertaining to the use of language. NLP is a set of tools and techniques devised to change how you represent or see things in your mind with the goal to change how you feel about those things. Many professional athletes use one specific NLP technique: Anchoring. We will teach you how to use it on the golf course.
Harvard Health Letter, 09/2015: “…Relief may come down to mind over matter: a technique called hypnotherapy…it helps you control or alter your thoughts, feelings, and physical state…a hypnotic trance empowers people to activate neural circuits that are otherwise hidden. This circuitry can activate greater comfort for pain relief, greater mental focus for certain activities, and greater self-esteem.”
